The Ministry of the People and Social Development provides mediation services as an alternative method of resolving conflict in communities throughout Trinidad. Community Mediation Centres proactively implement programmes that positively impact the way members of society respond to difficult life situations and conflicts. Trained and certified mediators can help resolve disputes between family members and within communities. Although the agreements reached in the mediation are not legally binding, since it was designed by all parties involved and reached in good faith, there is an inherent understanding that it would be upheld.
Programmes provided by Community Mediation Centres include:
- Anger management for parents, adolescents and teens.
- Building trust.
- Managing conflict in families and communities.
- Leadership skills development.
Who can apply?
Individuals, groups and families can apply for mediation services. There are no eligibility requirements and the service is provided without charge. Referrals are also accepted from the courts and other organisations.
How do I apply?
To apply for mediation services, please visit your nearest Community Mediation Centre. Mediation Centres are open Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, except public holidays.

How is mediation conducted?
Once a request has been made, an officer from the Community Mediation Centre will conduct an interview to determine the nature of the problem. The information is assessed and the other parties involved in the dispute are informed that a request for mediation has been made. If both parties agree to mediation, they are required to sign an Agreement to Participate in Mediation with a brief statement about the dispute to be resolved. Pre-mediation sessions are held separately with each party in order to obtain further details. From the information gathered, a recommendation is submitted to the manager of the Community Mediation Centre stating whether the case requires counselling, mediation or both.
If mediation is required, a mediator is assigned to the case within 14 days of the receipt of the Agreement to Participate in Mediation. A Notification of Appointment of Mediation will be sent to each participant informing them of the date and time of the commencement of the mediation process. After the conclusion of each mediation session, the mediator submits a report that records the progress made. The entire mediation process must be concluded within 90 days from the commencement date.
Can I become a mediator?
The Community Mediation Services Division is interested in identifying and sponsoring the training of persons in rural and remote communities to become certified mediators. Interested persons should contact the division at:
